Telltale warnings can save lives. The first line of defense in safely using natural gas is an effective odorization program. An effective program is one that consistently monitors the gas flow, computes and injects the proper dosage of odorant, and most importantly records this activity.
Typically, state regulations dictate the minimum odorant concentration. Since these odorants (mercaptan organosulfurs being the most common) are expensive, there are also economic concerns regarding excessive dosing.
Common mercaptan doses are in the range of 2 – 4 ppm (by volume, to gas); this translates to about
1 – 200 cc/minute, depending on pipeline size and natural gas velocity.
Robust flow monitoring equipment is essential to ensure proper odorization of natural gas; low flow measurement, accuracy, repeatability and easily-integrated signals for SCADA systems and PLC’s are required.
The inherent capabilities of Max flow meters have made us an industry standard for odorant measurement by local distribution companies and citygate sites.
Max equipment specified:
The Model P213 is used to accurately measure instantaneous injection rates from 1 - 1500 cc/minute. For instantaneous rates above 1500 cc/minute the Model P214 is the recommended meter. A high resolution transmitter (1000 pulses/cc – Model P213) is required because of the low flow and sudden on-off conditions associated with odorant injection pumps.
