The technology that wrings fuel efficiency out of diesel fuel measurement is coming to gasoline engines, too. It's called Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), and it refers to how the fuel is delivered to the engine's cylinders.
Up until now, gasoline has been injected into the cylinders by mixing it with air in the intake manifold. This indirect approach results in various inefficiencies in burning the fuel, and it can result in a lot of usable energy getting wasted. In a direct injection engine, however, the fuel is pumped straight into the combustion chamber. This allows the fuel to burn more evenly and thoroughly. With an assist from modern engine management computers, the fuel gets burned right where it's needed, when it's needed. For the driver, that translates into more mileage per gallon and greater power to the wheels.
Moving the injection point directly to the cylinder required that the fuel injector be able to overcome the pressure of the highly compressed air within the cylinder. Automotive component suppliers have come up with the solution: Rugged, high-pressure fuel injectors and the sophisticated electronics to make them perform optimally in GDI engines.
A whole new generation of high pressure fuel injectors precisely ration the fuel and manipulate the air-fuel ratios to optimize performance, emissions and fuel efficiency; with claims of cutting fuel consumption by 15 percent and providing more low—end torque than a comparable indirect injection system.
With consumer concern about the environment and gasoline prices approaching critical mass, automakers are ramping up production of their GDI offerings and preparing to launch new ones.
